Rob:
After I arrived in the USA, we lived at first with Cass mom: Velma,
also known as Copper. I have somewhat mixed feelings about that time. I
really liked Copper but I also know that I sometimes aggravated her.
And living with a person you don't really know is never a good thing. A
few times I felt like an intruder. Additional to this matter was that I
am a procrastinator.
We
found our own little place in September 2001. A rather nice 3 bedroom
apartement in Lancaster. We're still in the apartement complex. It was
closer to where Cass was and still is working. We also got a new(er)
car than her old Nissan: A '96 Chevy Cavalier.
After I got my work permit and then the greencard I tried to get a job.
I know I could have tried more and might have gotten one sooner, but I
was also slowly getting depressed and lost my spirit: Especially when
hearing "We're calling back" and nothing ever happens. I did get a few
ones, but they ranked from horrible (Jogger in a Printing Plant) to
so-so (Nightstocker/Floor care in a grocery store.) A few times, I
think, Cass might have gotten close to kick me out and I couldn't
really blame her.
Then, a very bad news came: Copper was diagnosed with lung cancer. She
underwent chemo- and radiotherapie, and I think for a while it actually
looked good, but then a devastating blow came: The cancer had spread
into her brain and the doctors declared it untreatable. Cass helped
taking care of her mother, who'se health rapidly declined.
Copper passed away in 2003.
